TREASURE ISLAND  History-

In 1918, a real estate investor who was trying to drum up business hired a group of men to "discover" a treasure chest that had been buried on the gulf beaches. After the chest was put on display at a local bank, people by the hundreds found their way to the beach.

And so city of Treasure Island was born.

But the city didn't start to assume its true identity, and separate itself from the other beach towns, until about 30 years later - when the motels were discovered.

The Thunderbird sign: It's often the first thing visitors see when they reach the city, and many people think the old bird is one of the real treasures of Treasure Island. The 40-foot-high red and green neon sign has been a landmark since it was erected in 1957.

Treasure Island is a unique city on the central Gulf Coast of Florida, part of the Gulf beaches of St. Petersburg and Clearwater. The town is actually a peaceful island that is 3.5 miles long, with a slow, gentle lifestyle. Driving through the city is like going back in time to the 50s, where you will see several preserved 50s style mid-century Modern structures including motels and vintage signs. Three Art Modern causeway bridges have become eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, reminding visitors of old retro "roadside" Florida. Not many places like it are left in the state today. Though quiet and relaxing, Treasure Island also has beach activities, fine dining and lots of shopping. Historic Johns Pass is just four miles away and offers deep-sea fishing excursions and day cruises. All types of outdoor recreation are available on Treasure Island, such as swimming, shelling, sunning, snorkeling, golf, parasailing and more. Treasure Island is known for its sport kite competition in January and its Taste of the Beaches food festival in April. A weeklong Pirate Days celebration takes place during the 4th of July weekend. From Treasure Island, its just a short drive to the St. Petersburg Pier and Harbor, and Orlando and Disney World are a 90-minute drive away. However, with its dazzling white sandy beaches and gorgeous sunsets ? you may find it hard to ever leave the island once youre here.

Treasure Island is a residential community, population 7,369, and tourist destination that incorporates five separate islands into one city. It is immediately west of St. Petersburg and is home to four miles of wide, flat Gulf of Mexico beach that has earned the nickname "Jewel of the Beaches." John's Pass, in Madeira Beach to the north end, and Blind Pass on the south provide boaters with fast and easy access to the Gulf of Mexico from Boca Ciega Bay.

Treasure Island features a family atmosphere and is known for its events including a regional sport kite competition in January, the Taste of the Beaches food festival in April, "Symphony on the Beach" in May and a week-long Pirate Days extravaganza during the July 4th weekend.

Treasure Island is an area undergoing somewhat of a transformation, mostly through teardowns and rebuilds. Treasure Island is directly on the Gulf of Mexico and also Bordering the Boca Ciega bay on the other.
